A Leader’s Habit

client insight

‘‘I pause and ask, is this decision mine to make, or mine to support?’

At a recent offsite, one senior leader shared a simple habit they rely on when the pressure builds and the priority list keeps growing:

“I pause and ask, is this decision mine to make, or mine to support?”

This simple question helps them stay focused. It filters distractions, clarifies priorities, and ensures they are developing capacity in others to lead.

Their team shared how this led to better decision-making. They had a stronger sense of direction, and over time, their confidence and capability grew because they were trusted to step forward. They also began to role model this for their direct reports, creating a ripple effect that lifted the capability of the whole function – improving delegation, strengthening leadership, and building collective accountability.

This is wisdom in practice: a calm awareness of where to lean in, where to guide, and how to act with purpose.

➡️ As priority lists continue to grow – this type of intentional delegation is absolutely essential.

Anchored Reflection:

💬 Where could stepping back create room for others to grow?

💬 What helps you focus your attention with intention?

Intentional Suggestion:

Before your next leadership team meeting, take 60 seconds to scan your top priorities. Ask yourself:

“Where do I need to step in, and where might others step up?”

Use that lens to guide your presence and participation in the room.
